Autism Calgary is pleased to offer an updated Disability Information Card to our members!
These cards are for autistic individuals or their supports to carry. Each card displays basic emergency contact information on the front, and individualized support tips on the back.
The intent is that this card will help you to communicate about your disabilities during a difficult situation, or in case of an emergency, and make it safer and easier to receive appropriate care by providing important information during stressful times.
In the past, Autism Calgary had run independent trials of ASD Emergency Alert Identification Cards. Depending on an individual’s circumstances, the cards proved to be helpful in a variety of circumstances. For example some autistic adults found the cards helpful in guiding urgent centre care staff who previously doubted the diagnosis or misunderstood invisible symptoms & atypical behaviours.
For some this may also help First Responders & Police to be more understanding and easily reach their emergency contact if unable to communicate. Aside from the emergency contact, age and name – we’ve avoided sensitive information so the card can be worn visibly in public for those who it would benefit to do so.
Another example, the family of a non speaking individual with Autism obtained a card for their caregiver. In the event of an emergency, the caregiver can alert & quickly inform first responders that a family member with Autism is in need of specialized support.
