Alberta Health Services (AHS) – Pediatrician
Your family doctor might be qualified to diagnose autism, if not they may send a referral to a Developmental Pediatrician. The developmental pediatrician is able to assess and potentially write a ‘letter of diagnosis’ which is a document stating the child has the diagnosis but doesn’t usually include any recommended services. Some professionals in Calgary experienced with assessing autism can be seen here.
Your family doctor can also refer you to a pediatric psychiatrist with expertise in Autism. These medical doctors can also diagnose autism. Again, these medical doctors can provide a letter of diagnosis but typically extensive assessments are not provided. This service is covered by our provincial health plan.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) – Child Development Services at Alberta Children’s Hospital
Sometimes a pediatrician would like a second opinion so they may send a referral to the Child Development Services (CDS) autism clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The process typically includes a waiting period of several months after seeing the pediatrician, but the timing varies depending on demand. We would encourage parents to attach their own observations with the referral for a more thorough referral to the CDS. When your family has gone through the process, you can expect to come out with an assessment (s) and a letter of diagnosis, plus some orientation sessions for the parents guiding them to additional services. This service is covered by the provincial health plan.

Psychologist – Private Assessment
You can get a private assessment done from a Registered Psychologist without a referral. This process is often much faster, but also more expensive. Typically, you can expect a diagnosis and an extensive psychological report. Generally, the cost is around $3000 and up. This service is paid out of pocket or with your extended employment health care benefits and is not covered by the provincial health plan. See for our list of psychologists (there are many more to choose from in the city).
