Autism Calgary Board Director Volunteer Opportunity – Seeking Candidates with Legal Background/Expertise

Autism Calgary is an association of individuals and families living with Autism striving to assist each other and the broader community so that those on the Autism Spectrum live meaningful and purposeful lives in a community that values them. The organization serves as the community of families, caregivers and supportive professionals collectively striving for a supportive, accepting and understanding community for individuals and families living with Autism.

Role of a Director: 
  • Collective Responsibilities of the Board 
  • As the governing body of the Autism Calgary, the board is accountable to the public including members and funders. It is responsible for: 
  • Strategic Planning: Determine the organization’s mission and purpose; approve overarching goals and objectives of all programs; set policies; monitor achievements and outcomes against those established goals; 
  • Oversight of Management: Evaluate performance and succession plans of the Executive Director. 
  • Financial Accountability: ensure that financial reporting and control systems are in place, and that proper judgment is used in all business and financial transactions. 
  • Maintaining the Board: select, recruit and nurture new board members; develop and review the performance of board members; and assess its meetings and own performance as a board. 
Individual Responsibilities of Directors: 
  • To achieve these collective responsibilities, individual board members are required to: 
  • Attend no less than 75% of regular board meetings (the board meets every month either virtually or in person)
  • Prepare for board meetings in advance by reviewing the pre-distributed materials 
  • Contribute to board discussions (both during and between formal meetings) especially where the director has specific knowledge or experience
  • Attend and support events (i.e. Autism Awareness Day, Christmas Party, etc.) 
  • Identify and disclose any potential conflicts of interest
  • Respect the confidentiality of organizational information
  • Serve on committees of the board and/or assist with special projects as requested by the Chairperson or Executive Director
  • Generally, advocate for Autism Calgary and its mission in the director’s day to day activities
Term of Service:
  • 2 years (with the option of serving two additional 2-year terms) 
  • Average Time Commitment 
  • Two to three hours per month; the Board meets formally once a month (either virtually or in person), on the last Tuesday of the month, except for July, August and December.
  • Attendance at annual AGM
  • Attendance at various events as needed and available
  • Service on a board committee, if needed
Director Qualifications 
  • Demonstrated breadth and depth of management and leadership experience or demonstrated community involvement
  • Integrity and high ethical standards
  • Sufficient time to devote to the Board’s business
  • Additional knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas: 
  • Not-for-profit leadership and governance 
  • Fund development 
  • Public Relations and Advocacy
  • Background in corporate or commercial law 
  • Risk Management 
  • Strategic Planning
  • Those who may also offer a lived experience and/or provide an understanding of diversity
  • A connection to ASD (personal, family, friend, or professional) is beneficial but not required

Please note at this time, we are specifically seeking candidates with a background in corporate or commercial law.
