Diagnosis and Assessment

Autism Diagnosis Options for Adults (18 yrs and older)

Here are various options for seeking out a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder:
  • Psychologists can diagnose autism. They provide an assessment report and a diagnosis for a fee (typically $1000 and up). Psychologists’ services are usually an out-of-pocket service or covered by private extended health care benefits such as your employer’s. Our list is only a portion of the number of psychologists that can provide this service, so feel free to research other names. We have a list of psychologists who provide assessments and diagnosis to adults. To see the full list click here
  • Any medical doctor, including family doctors, can diagnose a condition if they have the expertise. Dr. Gregory Skinner, a Family Physician in Calgary who offers this service, is not accepting patients unless it’s a direct referral from healthcare providers. https://www.autismexists.com/
  • A Psychiatrist with expertise in autism can also diagnose. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they are, therefore, covered by our provincial health insurance. You can request a referral to a psychiatrist from your family doctor. Your doctor’s office can contact Access Mental Health (403) 943-1500 to obtain the name of available psychiatrists doing this work.
