University of Calgary School of Public Policy researcher Dr. Herb Emery and research assistant Carolyn Dudly have released a comprehensive study this January examining the lifelong cost of care for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A copy of the research document can be viewed on School of Public Policy website.
Until now, there has been limited research evaluating the economics associated with the lifelong care of individuals with ASD. Autism Calgary members having already reviewed the report in detail are encouraged that this report will prove to be an invaluable tool to policy makers across Canada. While there are studies that speak to the social significance of supporting individuals with ASD, this report will help to show systems of support and decision makers that there is also a significant fiscal benefit to ensuring that both individuals and their families are provided supports to stay strong. A strong and health family is not only the socially responsible thing to do, but it is the fiscally responsible thing to do! A strong and resilient family is best equipped to play a lifelong role in supporting of a loved one whose life is impacted by ASD. Also, a lifelong system of support can ensure individuals with ASD are best positioned to contribute to our society. For some, this contribution can be to our economy through meaningful employment.
