YYC World Autism Awareness Day – April 2, 2015

April 2 was designated by a United Nations resolution in 2008 (62/139).  Since that time, communities throughout the world are marking this date to raise awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.  In Canada thanks to great support from Senator Jim Munson, Bill S-206, An Act Respecting World Autism Awareness Day was signed into law by the Governor General in October of 2012.

This year, people throughout Calgary gathered at Olympic Plaza 11am to 2pm this April 2, 2015. With a record crowd of well over 600 people filling Olympic Plaza, Mayor Nenshi lead the bubble blowing and spread the message that Calgarians with Autism are an important part of the Calgary community.

2015 marks our second year of celebrating United Nations World Autism Awareness day by blowing bubbles.  This year, other communities were also inspired to blow bubbles,  this year Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Red Deer also held events.

On Parliament Hill in Ottawa, a committed crowd of 100 met to mark the event – joining Senator Munson and some of our national leaders and advocates.  MP Mike Lake made a heart felt speech to fellow members of parliament: Click Here to hear his speech.
